Omega-3 fatty acids

By January 30, 2014 December 18th, 2015 articles, Videos

Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most unsung heroes of any mainstream nutrition advice. They’re incredibly beneficial to the human body, and are absolutely necessary for certain functions (that’s why they’re called “essential”). What’s funny is, though, is that the body is unable to create this important fat itself.

That’s why it’s important to include foods with omega-3s in your diet. There are plenty of foods containing omega-3s (most commonly fish). However, there are some foods, like certain pastas and breads, that have been enhanced with the benefits of omega-3s too.

Why would you want to include this polyunsaturated fatty acid in your diet? Well, they’re essential for a ton of bodily functions, but also are full of health benefits as well. These include:

  • improved artery health, cholesterol, and lung health.
  • support for mental, joint, and bone health.
  • decreased chance of cancer (colon, breast and prostate).
  • enhanced mood, promote weight loss, and help to protect vision.

For those of you who are looking to build muscle, it’s been suggested that fish oils support protein synthesis in muscles, and help reduce muscle breakdown!

Don’t sweat it too much if you’re having trouble fitting in foods teeming with omega-3s. These days it’s fairly easy to find omega-3 supplements at your local grocery or health food store. Opt for at least 500 mg caps!

Also, keep in mind that if you are supplementing, you may want to consult your doctor first. Make sure that what you’re taking is right for you first!

Hope this was able to shed some light on omega-3s and their benefits. They should be included in as many diets as possible, because whether you’re an athlete, or just someone looking to take better care of yourself, they are a must.

Do you use omega-3 supplements? Or do you prefer to get them through food? What about fish oil? Let us know in the comment section below! We want to hear your thoughts!
